Value Addition, Explained: Every Print, Embroidery, and Finish Option, Compared

"Value addition" is manufacturer-speak for anything you add to a plain garment — a print, an embroidered mark, a wash treatment. Most first-time founders skip straight to "screen print or DTF?" without realising there are several more real options, each suited to a different job. Picking backward from whatever's cheapest is how founders end up locking into a technique that doesn't actually suit their design or fabric. Here's what's actually available, what each one costs and how durable it really is, and how the decision should actually go.

The graphic techniques

These sit directly on or in the garment as the actual design — everything from a flat logo to a full-colour print.

  • Screen print (pigment dye and discharge dye) — ink is pushed through a mesh screen, one screen per colour: the cheapest technique at real volume, but every extra colour adds a screen and cost, so a 5-colour design on a 50-piece run gets expensive fast. Pigment dye sits on the surface and mellows into a soft, vintage look with wash; discharge dye strips the fabric's own colour and replaces it with the print, so the graphic becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top — softer hand-feel, won't crack — but it only works on reactive-dyed 100% cotton, not polyester or blends.
  • DTF (direct-to-film) — the design is printed onto a film, then heat-pressed onto the garment: no per-colour setup, so it's the practical choice for full-colour or photographic artwork at low-to-mid volumes, and it works across almost any fabric or blend. Sits slightly more on the surface than DTG or discharge.
  • DTG (direct-to-garment) — ink is printed straight into the fabric: a softer hand-feel than DTF, closer to how discharge feels, but it needs a cotton-rich fabric to hold the ink properly.
  • Puff print — ink raised into a soft 3D texture for tactile impact: struggles on thin, lightweight fabric that can't hold the raised shape, and the texture can flatten slightly over repeated wash and dry cycles.
  • Embroidery — the design is stitched directly into the fabric with thread: the most durable technique on this list, essentially lasting the life of the garment, but each design needs a one-time digitising setup, so the cost is fixed regardless of quantity — better value the larger the run.
  • Appliqué and sublimation — the specialty end: appliqué stitches a separate piece of fabric onto the garment for a raised, textured logo; sublimation dyes the print directly into synthetic fibre, so it only works well on polyester and light or white base colours. Both sit at the top of the cost tier and are usually picked for a specific design need rather than an everyday reorder.

Finishing treatments are value addition too

Not every value addition is a graphic. Acid wash and other whole-garment finishing treatments work on the entire piece rather than one design — acid wash uses a stone-and-chemical process to strip colour unevenly for a bleached, mottled finish, changing the fabric itself rather than sitting on top of it. It's a different category from print, embroidery, or appliqué, but it belongs in the same conversation: what the finished garment needs to look and feel like, not just what graphic goes on it.

A rough cost order

At typical production volumes, here's the honest ranking, cheapest to priciest: screen print, then DTF and DTG, then puff print and discharge dye, then embroidery, then sublimation and appliqué at the top. That order isn't fixed — a multi-colour screen print on a small run can end up costing more than a simple DTF design — but it's the right starting mental model before you ask anyone for a quote.

How durable is durable

Done correctly, every technique on this list should comfortably clear 30–40 washes without visibly failing. That's not a low bar — the industry testing standard for exactly this is ISO 6330, which defines the domestic wash-and-dry cycles labs use to measure garment durability, and a properly cured screen print or a well-pressed DTF transfer is commonly rated well past 50 wash cycles in real-world testing. Embroidery effectively lasts the life of the garment. Where a print actually fails early — 20 to 30 washes — it's almost never the technique itself; it's a rushed cure or a badly pressed transfer. Durability is a process and quality-control question as much as it's a technique question.

How to actually choose

Start from what the design needs to look and feel like, not from what's cheapest. Photographic or full-colour artwork points to DTF or DTG. A flat one- or two-colour logo at real volume points to screen print. A textured, dimensional mark points to puff print or embroidery. A brand mark that has to survive years of washing without changing points to embroidery, full stop. Once you know the look you're after, fabric usually narrows the field further — discharge needs reactive-dyed cotton, sublimation needs polyester — and cost and MOQ decide between whatever's left. Working backward from budget first is how founders end up locking into a technique that doesn't actually suit the fabric or the design.
